What To Do If Utility Bill Shows High Usage


If you feel your water usage is higher than normal, please check the following before contacting City Hall.

1.  Turn off all inside and outside water faucets and then look at the wheel on the water meter.  If the wheel is turning, this is an indication you may have a leak somewhere in your plumbing.  In this case, please call your plumber.
 

2.  
Check to make sure your toilets are not running while not in use.  This could cause extremely large amounts of water usage.  A simple test for this is to put a package of kool-aid in the tank of your toilet.  Let it set for about an hour.  If the water in the toilet bowl turns color, your toilet is leaking. 

3.  
Make sure all your appliances are energy efficient. This includes washing machines, water softeners, dishwashers, and toilets. Older appliances can cause excessive water and electrical usage.

Have you had extra visitors? This could create extra laundry, showers, toilet use, cooking, and dish washing.
